PJ's Project - old ideas

I just wanted to post some old sketches of an old idea I was working on.
Just as a reminder - I often find I go off in a tangent with a more simple idea and produce a finished piece far more quickly - It's just the right inspiration thats needed.

I still like the idea and rough designs. They are about how the healthy smoothie affects the body, using wordplay with 'P' and 'J' - much like the company already did - as to why I decided against the idea after some advice. A character concept was in working...

I feel my final vector art posters work better and would work better in action, although at the time I was going for a rustic, hand made look to represent the healthy lifestyle, away from the computer.

FMP - SAM goody bag

When I first had a meeting at SAM they gave me a load of their current and old advertising - Posters, flyers, leaflets, stickers, business cards, and even gig tickets of gigs they helped promote for awareness in return.

I thought I'd photograph and post a few. They do the job, however there are other jobs I have been asked to do for the company. These examples clearly show that the company tends to use templates to place different type, information and images onto. They want new templates, for different purposes and perhaps the same purposes aswell.

Their logo is strong and won't need changing in my opinion. Playing around with the existing logo could be interesting however, even if this simply means layering or integrating other images in and around it for the purpose of a themed template or poster for example, or even changing the colours. The first thing I thought of with this in mind, was the Design Museum logo, and also a mail order skateboard magazine 'rollersnakes' I get sent monthly with a simple yet interesting nice touch to the envelope it is sent in.

I am still finishing off my Business report for Anne, but I have started sketching and idea developing in my own time for template and poster ideas and composition layouts, aswell as collecting relevant images of interest.

SAM have already thought of a more pressing job that they would like me to work on - They have a member of 'The Stranglers' participating in workshops, and they need some posters for it. The next meeting will give me an idea of what they require and I will get to work on them straight away - they are offering me free vocal lessons for the posters aswell as work that will go into the FMP, and the vocal lessons will, as we have both agreed, give me a more personal insight to the company and allow me to experience first hand what they offer.

D&AD - Handed in

After a minor problem in uploading the files to accompany the work boards I sent, I personally sent a CD to D&AD after being told to do so by e-mail.

Here are the finished posters, as a 3-part series...

Based on the three flavours they sold (before they went bust) the corresponding coloured flavour appears on each poster to match the sequence of a traffic light. The typeface was infact taken from collected PJ material, traced and re-created as an alphabet in illustrator. Three stages of a traffic light are shown with three stages of seeing the product, wanting it, then purchasing and drinking it - all with a direct message to instruct and hopefully sell. Of course this is too late for the company, but I am very happy with the design, which had to be altered for billboard use as I decided the graphics did not look right on landscape format.

D&AD - PJ Smoothies

My deadline is this Wednesday, and after the pre-deadline crit on our progress last week, I decided to stick to the idea of taking advantage of the 3 different colours of the smoothie's flavour range and create 3 posters as a sequence with the idea of a traffic light changing colours.

Today I spent a good hour or so drawing vector graphics around a traffic light photograph, one which I found had an interesting angle and a city in the background with a good perspective.
I decided to use some old wallpapers/backgrounds I had created at the beginning of the project by printing paint with real fruit and scanning/editing on photoshop.

Here is what I ended up with...

The effect within the lights was created by experimenting in illustrator with simple coloured circles. Separating them further and further around the edges gave a more spherical effect, and then I simply placed the shapes of the traffic light bulbs over the texture I had created and cut them to shape with the 'pathfinder' tool.

I have yet to play around with what text and logo's to place on the finished posters, aswell as varying colours and traffic light sequence. I also experimented with making the PJ logo and bottle shapes with dots, and I have also gone around most styles of type and tried creating a basic alphabet out of them to possibly be used with whatever type I decide to go onto them.
I am finally happy with my idea and the graphics so far, I just need to have really catchy type and I'll be ready to submit by Wednesday hopefully.

FMP - First meeting with S.A.M

Today I met up with Ben Stringer (managing director) Rob Biss (managing director) and Sam Schiffer (Assistant manager) of SAM - The Sussex Academy of Music...

SAM is a new music tuition Academy on Shoreham seafront, catering for anyone and everyone. I emailed them at the start of the new year and they seemed keen to support me with my FMP in creating advertising for them. I am glad I decided to work with them - After a meeting with them today that could not have gone better, things seem very promising.

I arrived early whilst they were having their lunch - They decided to start the meeting anyway - very friendly people, and the meeting felt very casual and relaxed. The timing is perfect for them, as my work should be finished in time for the new term at schools and colleges. They were very impressed with the work I showed them, they described it as 'fresh' and they were keen to see that I had paid and made the effort to get things printed/made to a finish. They liked the serious quality of the designs with the fun, comedy aspect that could appeal to schools.

The company has been in trade for 4 months, and was set up about a year ago by Ben and Rob. The budget to date has been around £125,000 and they have endorsements and support from top end suppliers in the music trade. Through their contacts they can provide free professional printing which could be very handy.

What we discussed at the meeting were issues such as where the company wants to go in the future and what work they would like me to produce. They hoarded me with loads of their existing advertising (which I will post later) and explained to me what they didn't like about it. The only feature that will remain the same is the company logo, which is pretty tight in it's design.

SAM would like t0 -
  • Work within schools/colleges within the next year.
  • Get more people on board and start making a profit.
  • Work with the NHS for people with special needs.
  • Possibly work with the police force to get people away from crime with music.
They clearly stated that they did not have the time to create decent and fresh advertising, and they are not only excited to work with me for both our benefit, but they also said they would be keen to have me working with/ for them in the future - especially with other organizations like the NHS. They currently have the support of the EBP (educational Business partnership) and Adur council.

The work they require -

  • A campaign to promote the awareness of the company.
  • Themed templates for all advertising/documents...
Such as 'Rock', 'Jazz' etc... Diverse for their different audience range.
  • Striking Pdf artwork/advertising to send in an email...
To get attention of schools etc, and get admittance and recognition. Work that 'says everything' about the company in one image.
  • Artwork that could be applied to existing website.

They want a consistant corporate identity and house style, but they also want the diversity they have seen in my work examples. I've arranged to have weekly meetings with SAM as and when we are both free. This could be a very exciting project...

I left them a copy of my 'comic book' design CV, forgot to leave them a CD with my work on it so I will post it to their address next week.
